And notwithstanding the many labors which I have performed in the church, I have never received so much as even one senine for my labor; neither has any of my brethren, save it were in the judgment-seat; and then we have received only according to law for our time. And now, if we do not receive anything for our labors in the church, what doth it profit us to labor in the church save it were to declare the truth, that we may have rejoicings in the joy of our brethren? (Alma 30:33-34)
I have been pondering what it means to Labor. The scriptures show how those who labor for the Lord, do not receive any money for their labors. Alma shows the only thing they receive for their labors is the rejoicings in the joy of their brethren. As seen in Alma 1,
And when the priests left their labor to impart the word of God unto the people, the people also left their labors to hear the word of God. And when the priest had imparted unto them the word of God they all returned again diligently unto their labors (Alma 1:26)
The priests were commanded to labor with their own hands.
He also commanded them that the priests whom he had ordained should labor with their own hands for their support. (Mosiah 18:24)
The wicked kind Noah on the other hand received for his Labors.
1 ... Noah began to reign in his [fathers] stead; and he did not walk in the ways of his father.
2 For behold, he did not keep the commandments of God, but he did walk after the desires of his own heart. And he had many wives and concubines. And he did cause his people to commit sin, and do that which was abominable in the sight of the Lord. Yea, and they did commit whoredoms and all manner of wickedness.
3 And he laid a tax of one fifth part of all they possessed, a fifth part of their gold and of their silver, and a fifth part of their ziff, and of their copper, and of their brass and their iron; and a fifth part of their fatlings; and also a fifth part of all their grain.
4 And all this did he take to support himself, and his wives and his concubines; and also his priests, and their wives and their concubines; thus he had changed the affairs of the kingdom.
5 For he put down all the priests that had been consecrated by his father, and consecrated new ones in their stead, such as were lifted up in the pride of their hearts.
6 Yea, and thus they were supported in their laziness, and in their idolatry, and in their whoredoms, by the taxes which king Noah had put upon his people; thus did the people labor exceedingly to support iniquity. (Mosiah 11:1-6)
The people allowed the king to subject them to these circumstances, because of that they allowed themselves to labor exceedingly to support iniquity. The wicked king in his laziness, was supported by the people instead of laboring for his own.
King Benjamin also labored for his own support. It reads,
And even I, myself, have labored with mine own hands that I might serve you, and that ye should not be laden with taxes, and that there should nothing come upon you which was grievous to be borne—and of all these things which I have spoken, ye yourselves are witnesses this day. (Mosiah 2:14)
Labor For the Lord:
Labor appears to be tied with service of your fellow men and preaching the truth that others may come to a knowledge of the truth.
For God is not unrighteous, therefore he will not forget your work and labor of love, which ye have showed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister. (JST, Hebrews 6:10)
Behold, ye have called me your king; and if I, whom ye call your king, do labor to serve you, then ought not ye to labor to serve one another? (Mosiah 2:18)
And now, my beloved son, notwithstanding their hardness, let us labor diligently; for if we should cease to labor, we should be brought under condemnation; for we have a labor to perform whilst in this tabernacle of clay, that we may conquer the enemy of all righteousness, and rest our souls in the kingdom of God. (Moroni 9:6)
But the laborer in Zion shall labor for Zion; for if they labor for money they shall perish. (2 Nephi 26:31)
As we labor to serve our fellow men "the Lord of the vineyard labor[s] also" (Jacob 5:72) with us. It is when we "labor with our own hands" (D&C 38) that we can be servants in His vineyard.
